About the treatment

When decay damages a tooth, the affected part has to be removed and replaced before the damage reaches the nerve. The earlier it is treated, the simpler and more conservative the filling.

After local anaesthesia, we clean the affected area and restore the tooth with tooth-coloured composite, shaped layer by layer to bring back its natural form and function.

How the treatment works

1. An examination of the tooth and, when needed, an X-ray to see how deep the decay is.
2. Local anaesthetic, so that you feel no pain.
3. Removal of the decayed part and cleaning of the area.
4. Placement of the composite layer by layer, shaping, a bite check and polishing.

How long it takes

A filling usually takes 30–60 minutes and is completed in one visit. The time depends on the size and position of the decay.

Who it is for

Patients with tooth decay, with old damaged fillings or with slightly chipped teeth. When the damage is very large, the dentist may recommend a crown instead of a filling.

Does a filling hurt?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain. Afterwards you may have some sensitivity, which usually passes within a few days.

When can I eat after a filling?

Composite is hardened immediately with a curing light, but it is best to wait until the anaesthetic wears off so that you do not bite your lip or cheek.

How long does a filling last?

With good hygiene and regular check-ups, composite fillings usually last for several years. Their lifespan depends on the size of the filling and on your bite.
