About the treatment

An apicoectomy (root-end resection) is a minor surgical procedure carried out when infection at the tip of the root persists even after root canal treatment. The aim is to save the natural tooth instead of removing it.

Under local anaesthesia, the dentist reaches the root tip through the gum, removes the infected tissue and the end of the root, and closes the area. Afterwards we give you clear instructions for healing.

How the treatment works

1. X-rays and planning of the procedure.
2. Local anaesthetic and a small opening in the gum to reach the root tip.
3. Removal of the infected tissue and the root tip, then sealing of the end of the canal.
4. Stitching of the gum and instructions for healing.

How long it takes

The procedure usually takes 30–90 minutes. Stitches are removed after about a week, while the bone heals fully within a few months.

Frequently asked questions

Does the procedure hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain. For the first few days you may have swelling and some discomfort, managed with pain relief and cold compresses.

How long does healing take?

Most patients return to their normal activities within 1–2 days. Healing of the bone is monitored with follow-up X-rays.

What is the alternative?

The alternative is usually extraction of the tooth and its replacement with an implant or bridge. An apicoectomy aims to keep the natural tooth.
